Chap at Tenderbest this morning after breakfast catching some well deserved shut-eye. Plate & cup had been pushed into the centre of the table, chair pulled out. Started his day early and overcome now: head thrown back onto the iron upright behind; hands clasped in front against the tabletop. The newspaper was deployed for nest-building: 3-4 scrunched pages softened the headrest; in front more was jammed against the sharp outer edge of the table. Impressive resourcefulness—the mashing that produced a discordant impression did not detract from the fine peaceableness. Without the pillowing there would have been no ease. A working man's hands that had perhaps toiled from before dawn understandably hung heavy by mid-morning. This way it might be possible to get ten minutes decent repose.
